The first major x402 upgrade won’t be about speed or cost; it’ll be about KYC/AML for AI agents. Who’s responsible when an autonomous agent buys something illegal? How do you enforce sanctions on a wallet controlled by a large language model? The card giants are positioning to provide the identity-and-compliance layer atop x402, effectively recreating their moat as a service layer rather than an execution layer. The bold move isn’t Visa saying goodbye to its network; it’s Visa saying “your machine-to-machine payments can run anywhere, but they’ll need our compliance API.” That’s the real chess game.
Second blind spot: the 2-second settlement is only valid for low-value, high-frequency payments. For anything significant, two seconds isn’t finality—it’s a confirmation with enough block-reorg risk on certain chains to matter. The spec currently reads like a great protocol for purchasing API credits or tipping an agent for a Google search. It’s not a settlement layer for invoices or wholesale transactions.
